Solar Collectors, Evacuated Tube Solar Collectors

Evacuated tube solar collectors are one of the most common and simplest forms of the solar technology field. The evacuated tube solar collector is also known as a vacuum tube solar water heater. It consists of parallel rows of glass tubes connected to a header pipe. Each tube has the air removed from it to eliminate heat loss through convection and radiation. These glass tubes are cylindrical in shape, So, they can trap the maximum heat from the sun and increase the temperature of the fluid in the pipe, The cylindrical shape of the tubes receives the sun’s rays at a perpendicular angle. Therefore, even when the weather is cloudy, the evacuated tube solar collector efficiently performs its functions.

These collectors feature a heat pipe (a highly efficient thermal conductor) placed inside a vacuum-sealed tube. The pipe, which is a sealed copper pipe, attached to a black copper fin that fills the tube (absorber plate) is a metal tip attached to the sealed pipe (condenser). The heat pipe contains a small amount of fluid that undergoes an evaporating-condensing cycle. In this cycle, solar heat evaporates the liquid, and the vapor travels to the heat sink region where it condenses and releases its latent heat. The condensed fluid return back to the solar collector and the process is repeated. When these tubes are mounted, the metal tips up, into a heat exchanger (manifold).

While the temperature in the traditional Heatpipe can easily rise to 250°C, the renewed Thermo Controlled Heatpipe stops at 110°C. As soon as this temperature is reached, the inside of the Heatpipe boils dry, so that the operation stops. In short, no protection in mechanical parts, but thermal in the core of the Heat pipe.
